(3) D & J Sneddon, ranked among the significant coalmasters of the Wishaw area were the owners of Cambusnethan Colliery (near Cambusnethan House) and would have built the Rows to house his workforce. In many of the collieries of the mid-19th Century, wire ropes were now used in the winding gear. However, Sneddon's colliery continued to use the less secure hemp ropes and in 1865 two men were killed when being lowered down a shaft. A cage rope snapped and the men fell to their death eighty feet below. Aaron would have worked at the colliery at this time and would have probably known the dead men and their families. The mine owners abused their workforce in many ways, some as savage wage cuts, fraudulent weighing of hutches at the pit, head and eviction of miners from company houses during strikes and lockouts. However amongst the worst of practise was the truck method of payment, where wages were paid monthly and in some cases every five weeks. Most workers could not manage to budget for this period and had to ask for advances, which were either given as credit slips of in money with interest charges. The credit slips had to be redeemed from company stores and if they used them anywhere else their wages were stopped. Although Sneddon did not keep a company store they benefited from high interest, 'Poundage' of 5% at that time 1/- in every £.

Retired Sergeant-Major James Neilson Promoted to Glory from Chicago

CHICAGO (Temple), Ill. - Funeral services for retired Sergeant-Major James Neilson of the Chicago Englewood Corps were conducted here recently by Colonel Bramwell Tripp, field secretary.

Sergeant-Major Neilson, who would have been 90 years old on March 3, was well-known and respected not only in the Chicago area but throughout the Central Territory. For 30 years, from 1918 to 1948, he had served as sergeant-major of the Englewood Corps. There he had a profound influence on scores of young people who found in 'Ma' and 'Dad' Neilson trusted friends and sensible counsellors.

In recent years, following the promotion to Glory of Mrs. Neilson, the sergeant-major was a familiar figure in the united Friday night meetings at the Temple Corps, where he was almost invariably one of the first to rise to his feet and to witness to the saving and sanctifying power of the Lord in his life.

James Neilson was born in Bellshill, Scotland, on March 3, 1877. There he received his formal schooling and apprenticeship training. He was converted in a Salvation Army meeting there in February 1896, and in April of that year he was enrolled as a soldier and commissioned a local officer.

Coming to the United States in 1910, he continued his Salvation Army service in the Chicago No. 8 Corps and then in the Chicago No. 14 (Englewood) Corps.

Participating in the funeral service were Brigadier George Williams, Englewood Corps officer, who offered prayer; Mrs. Major James MacLean, wife of a former Englewood commanding officer, who sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee"; and Colonel Tripp.

In his message the field secretary referred to Sergeant-Major Neilson as "my friend" and recounted some of the conversations and prayer times they had shared.

"He had no fear of death," Colonel Tripp declared. "He looked forward to the day when Jesus would open the gate of Heaven and say, 'My son, come in.' "

Basing his message on the first three verses of John 14, Colonel Tripp declared that the person who possesses a quiet heart is one who knows the person, place and presence of God. Such a one, he said, was Sergeant-Major Neilson.

(17) The committal service at Glen Oak Cemetery also was conducted by Colonel Tripp.

(18) On the following Sunday evening a memorial service was held at the Temple Corps. Colonel Tripp piloted the meeting; Brigadier Howard Chesham offered prayer; Colonel C. Stanley Staiger, staff secretary, brought the message; Scripture was read by Mrs. Staiger; and music was provided by Major Ernest Miller, vocal soloist, and the Temple Songsters led by Songster Leader Gordon Bingham. Tributes were paid by Mrs. John Alberts and by Captain C. Ardena Hutchings. Mrs. Alberts and Sergeant-Major Neilson had been soldiers together for some 30 years, and it was at his request that she was chosen to speak. She spoke of his life as a blessing to the corps and emphasized the fact that he had been faithful - faithful in work, in prayer, in attendance at meetings, in teaching a Sunday school class, in visitation and in soul winning. "He loved and served his Master," she affirmed. Captain Hutchings had met Sergeant-Major Neilson at a territorial Bible and leadership institute 10 years ago and had kept up correspondence with him - at first by letter and, when his eyesight failed, by tape recording.

She referred to his keen insight into the Word of God and to his prayer life. He spent four hours every morning praying for friends and loved ones, she said. "Many times when some special blessing came to me, I felt it was because of his prayer." In his message Colonel Staiger spoke of those who are honored by God.

"God honors His servants by dwelling in those who love and serve Him," the colonel stated. "Sergeant-Major Neilson was such a person." He spoke of the "holy influence" emanating from Neilson's life. "His was the voice of abiding experience," he said. Among those present at the funeral and memorial services were three surviving children of Sergeant-Major Neilson: Mrs. Margaret Jobe, James Neilson, and John Neilson.

(1) In the 1881 census a Moses Nelson of the correct age (16) and birthplace, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, was listed as living at No 42 Sneddon Rows Castlehill Fews, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Listed as a Boarder with John Sneddon as Head of household. This was the same address given during the marriage of his Father Aaron and Mother Jemima in 1865.

(2) Interestingly, Moses in 1881 aged 16 was not living with his father. Moses now a coal miner, himself was living back in Wishaw, in Sneddon's Rows, boarding with the owner John Sneddon. It is fun to speculate that Moses did not get on with his new step-mother of his father did not want his son around his new wife who was closer in age to Moses than his father.

(3) Sneddon's rows were infamous for their squalor and were condemned shortly after Moses moved away. It was said that the stench of open sewage was overpowering. Raw sewage floated in open drains, through the fields and into the river Clyde. By 1910 when Sneddon's rows at Gowkthrapple were 60 years old, the 50 single-ends, were primitive and disgusting. Some of the houses had subsided below the level of the open channels, but were still inhabited long after the colliery had been closed.

(4) In the 1891 Census, Moses age 25, born Wishaw was listed as a Coal-miner living at 43 Low Blantyre Road, Burnbank, Hamilton, with his wife Margaret (aged 24, born Blantyre) and his three children, Margaret (aged 4, born Blantyre), James (aged 3, born Hamilton) and John (aged 1, born Hamilton). 1891 Census

(5) By 1896 Moses was most likely residing at 177 Glasgow Road, Greenfield, as a Moses Neilson, Miner was listed in the 1896-97 Electoral Roll. He was not present in 5th Ward by 1899. He may have moved from the area or be dead by this time.

(6) Moses Nelson, coal miner, widower of Margaret Halliday died aged 71 on the 21St November 1937 at 43 Hardie Street, Blantyre of Chronic bronchitis, myocarditis. His parents were listed as Aaron Nelson, coal hewer and Jemima Nelson, previously Boyd, ms Paterson, deceased. George Nelson, son was informant on the 22nd November 1937 at Blantyre.

a. MARGARET NELSON, b. c1887, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland; d. Unknown

b. JAMES NELSON, b. c1888, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland; d. Unknown

c. JOHN10 NELSON, b. 16 Nov 1889, Greenfield, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland; d. 15 Feb 1949, Coventry, England, m. Elizabeth Dale Dunlop, 25 Apr 1919, Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland

(2) Abraham died 14th February 1949 aged 76, cause of death was listed as Myocarditis 1 year and bronchitis 1 month. Address was given as 12 Glenlee Street, Hamilton with occupation given as Colliery Surface Worker.

Notes on Abraham and Mary Nelson:

(1) Abraham and Mary were married 23rd April 1897 at 24 Dixon Street, Bent, Hamilton, after Banns of the Church of Scotland. Abraham was listed as a Coal Miner and Mary as Housekeeper. Abraham was listed as living at 21 Glebe Street, Hamilton and Mary at the marriage address. By the marriage, both of Abraham's parents, Aaron and Jemima were listed as deceased. Mary's parents were listed as William Logan, a Colliery Fireman, and Euphemia, ms Williamson, (deceased). Andrew?? Robertson, Minister of <?> conducted the marriage; witnessed by Thomas <Turnbull> and James Logan. The marriage was registered in the District of Hamilton, April 27th 1897.

Notes on Mary Taylor Logan:

(1) In the 1881 census Mary aged 4 was living with her family at Lynn Street, Dalry. Her father William, aged 33, born Dalry was listed as an Iron Miner. His wife was listed as Euphemia Logan, age 26, born Motherwell. With them were Mary’s brother, Hugh age 3, born Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, sister Jane Aitken Logan age 1 born Dalry and cousin Robert Williamson, age 11, born Kilwinning, Ayr.

(2) Mary was born 17th October 1876 at 1.00am at Templand Road, Dalry. Her father William Logan was listed as a coal miner. The birth was registered in the Parish of Dalry, Ayr, 1876, copy dated 11th March 1940, Andrew C. Bryson, Registrar.

Her father was listed as William Logan, coal hewer, deceased and mother as Euphemia Taylor Williamson, deceased. The informant was Aaron Nelson of 17 Robertson Street, Hamilton. The death was registered in the District of Hamilton, 16th February 1955, Robert Hugh?? Listed as Registrar.

(4) Rachel Nelson, who new Abraham in the early and late 1940s said he was a fine gentleman, always seen out in his bowler hat. He was said to have been a soldier and in the Royal Navy, as well as working in the coalmines, as a hutch mender around 1920. In his later life he had a surface job, which was considered, literally a step up in career. At this time Abraham also became a born again Christian and became a lay preacher at a local brethren hall.

(5) Rachel remembers that Abraham would often go down to Rothsay to stay with his female cousin who ran a boarding house on the front, with her husband.

(6) Abraham and Mary had only two children, Aaron and Jemima, clearly named after Abraham's parents. Mary had had many pregnancies but most were stillborn or miscarriages. Mary moved in with her daughter's family at 20 Robertson Street, Hamilton when Abraham died and she died there on the 16th February 1955. There was considerable family strife as although it was most common for elderly relatives to move in with the oldest daughter's family, Aaron, Mary's son lived alone with his wife only a few doors away across the street. Jemima had five children at this time and little room, yet took her mother in. Aaron's wife was said to have put her foot down and would not allow Aaron's mother to live with them.

(7) Mary's father William Logan, aged 26, iron miner married Mary's mother Euphemia Williamson, aged 21, domestic servant, spinster on the 31st December 1875 at Dalry, after banns according to the forms of the established church of Scotland. William's parents were listed as Hugh Logan, labourer and Jane Logan, ms Aitken. Euphemia's parents were listed as James Williamson, labourer, deceased and Mary Williamson, ms Taylor deceased. Robert <??> minister of Dalry conducted the ceremony, James Archibald and Mary Morris were witnesses. The marriage was registered on the 3rd January 1876 at Dalry.

Mary wanted Aaron to stop working in the mines, so decided to live on little or no money for a number of years so that Aaron could become qualified for a desk job. Aaron eventually became a Civil Servant and worked in Montrose Crescent Social Security Office until he retired. His office was famous in the 1960s for their office parties around Christmas time, when all the children of the workforce came together, with all the usual party food and presents.
